DERMAL FILLERS

ABOUT

Dermal fillers are a FDA approved non-surgical option designed to improve age related facial volume loss. Dermal fillers consist of Hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring sugar found in the body that makes your joint spaces feel slippery. Hyaluronic acid works by holding in water at the injection site and acting as a cushioning agent. It adds temporary volume and a smoother appearance to skin.

Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers produce immediate visible results and can be reversed, unlike some other fillers, e.g. Sculptra and Radiesse. Depending upon where the filler is injected, it can correct fine lines, reduce folds and creases, minimize loss of volume, enhance or smooth lips.

Dermal fillers are often used in combination with anti-wrinkle injections to smooth out lines and wrinkles and rejuvenate the face.

Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® are FDA approved dermal filler brands that have variety of products for various uses:

What are the Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Fillers is a popular cosmetic treatment for lines and wrinkles that can be done in less than 30 minutes and provide immediate results that lasts for months. Dermal Fillers can give a more youthful, well-rested look at a fraction of a cost of traditional facelift.

Dermal Fillers consist of hyaluronic acid, the substance naturally occurring in a human body. Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide molecule which is one of the chief components of connective tissue, forming a gelatinous matrix that surrounds cells. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are non-permanent, meaning that they are reabsorbed into the body over time.

The most common FDA approved brands of Dermal Fillers in the US are Juvéderm and Restylane. Both companies make a wide variety of dermal fillers for various purposes.

FAQ's

What are the fillers used for in cosmetics?

In cosmetics, Dermal Fillers are used to fill hollow spaces, e.g. wrinkles and lines, that occur as a normal part of aging. As we age, the subcutaneous fat layer becomes thinner and facial muscles are working closer to the skin surface, making lines and wrinkles more apparent. Genetics, lifestyle and sun exposure affect skin aging process and speed.

Dermal Fillers can quickly help restoring lost volume on the face, lips, and hands in cases of mild to moderate loss of subcutaneous fat. Dermal Fillers can restore or enhance the volume of the lips, correct deepening nasolabial folds, restore lost volume of the cheeks, correct facial contour and more.

How long do fillers last?

Dermal Fillers injection take less than 30 minutes and provides immediate results that last from 4 months to over a year, depending on your metabolism, area of the treatment and the type of the dermal filler.

What to expect at the office visit?

At the visit, the area of the treatment will be numbed with topical anesthetic. Dermal Filler then will be injected in the areas needing correction. Most dermal fillers have Lidocaine (numbing medication) in them, which deeper numbs the injected area. Procedure is generally well tolerated and does not require down time. Mild swelling and redness are common after the injection and will subside within few hours. An ice pack will be applied to minimize bruising and swelling.

Is preparation required before the procedure?

There is no preparation required for the procedure, however, it is advised to stop taking blood thinners, e.g. Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Motrin, etc. two day before the procedure to minimize bruising after injection.

What should I do after the procedure?

Take it easy for the rest of the day, do not exercise or do any strenuous activities until next day. To help swelling and bruising, you may gently apply an ice pack to the affected area. Application of Arnica cream or gel can significantly help to heal bruising and reduce swelling.

In most cases, clients can safely return to their normal activities the same day.

Why do some people look “overfilled”?

Cosmetic treatments offer almost instant gratification and significant improvements in appearance. At times, it can create unreasonable treatment goals. Social media is guilty of promoting unnatural beauty standards. However, it would take numerous treatments of filler and incorrect placement to look unnatural. My goal is for my clients to look as naturally beautiful as possible, similar to how they looked 10 years ago or after a good night sleep by gently correcting or enhancing their natural features.
